The Virginia State Police Academy is located at the State Police Headquarters complex at 7700 Midlothian Turnpike, North Chesterfield, Virginia.
The training involves 1,536 hours of instruction covering more than 100 courses. Subjects studied range from laws of arrest, search and seizure, defensive tactics, motor vehicle code, criminal law, to name a few. The training is completed in four phases.
Phase I - The first 12 days are at the Academy at which time the students receive abbreviated training in various subjects.
Phase II - Pre-Academy Field Training which ranges from two to four months depending on the hire date of the student, at which time the students ride with a field training officer (FTO).
Phase III - Students then return to the Academy for 26 weeks of Basic Training, completing both classroom and practical courses of instruction.
Phase IV - Following graduation, troopers have an additional six to eight weeks of field training with a FTO.
Training materials are furnished, as well as meals and lodging. Trooper trainees are on full salary from the time they are hired.
