Explore the Installation Facility
The Installation Facility is responsible for taking a “barebones” vehicle from the manufacturer and building an operational and highly specialized public safety vehicle, by installing emergency lighting and various communications equipment.
The facility also researches, identifies, and implements the latest public safety communications and associated accessories, such as: in-car cameras, push bumpers, and emergency lighting. When needed, they are able to fabricate mountings for unique equipment installations in specialty vehicles such as motorcycles, command posts, covert vehicles, and boats.
Explore the Fleet Services Garage
The Fleet Services Garage handles the quality control and routine maintenance for each vehicle that enters the facility. They not only receive vehicles from across the Department, but also from a wide range of car dealerships and 21 other state agencies.
Fleet Services ensures each vehicle received is properly equipped, washed, detailed, and fully functioning before issue to assigned users throughout the Commonwealth. This facility also conducts vehicle speed calibrations, decommissions vehicles that have reached end of service life, and prepares vehicles that have been damaged beyond repair for surplus.
Explore Field Communications
Field Communications Technicians work out of the Division 7 Headquarters across the Commonwealth providing behind the scenes technical support for the State law enforcement officers vehicles and their equipment. These technicians also support the communication resources for twenty-one other Agencies in Virginia. This support includes servicing and programming radio systems and emergency equipment, maintaining dispatch center computers and networking, in car camera systems, vehicle computers known as MDT’s, maintaining the on-the-ground equipment at 108 radio tower sites, as well as other communications needs. Field Communications Technicians go where the law enforcement agencies need them — whether it is a Division HQ, an area office, radio tower, a boat in a marina, or even to homes of officers whose vehicles may need to be serviced when they are off duty.
Since Field Communications Technicians cover a wide support area, they are provided with a work vehicle that they take home every night. Each technician is also provided with the appropriate tools and test equipment needed to perform their jobs. Like all roles with the Communications Division, there are many opportunities for job-based certifications and skills training.
