The Virginia State Police supports its personnel through a comprehensive, holistic Wellness Program. From our Therapy Dog, Piper, to full-time peer support, our wellness staff teaches and coaches “cognitive fitness” for all members every step in their career and beyond.
Wellness is Important to Virginia State Police
First Responders see more traumatic events in one or two years than most people do in an entire lifetime. Average of 188 events in a career was previous estimate. This number is rising into the thousands.
The emotional trauma in the workplace can manifest itself as absenteeism, poor presenteeism, task avoidance, employee conflicts, accidents or loss of motivation. Additional red flags include heightened anxiety, fear, anger, or rising levels of uncooperativeness or forgetfulness. These symptoms impact not only your work life but your home life as well.
Cognitive Fitness
The more cognitively fit First Responders are, the better equipped they are to problem solve and manage stress. For this reason, cognitive fitness exercises are taught at the academy.
