Dispatcher Senior – Colonial Heights

The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Dispatcher Senior at our Division 1 Headquarters in Colonial Heights, Virginia. The successful candidate will function as lead emergency communications dispatch worker in the Virginia State Police (VSP), Division I, Communications Center; provide assistance to law enforcement and emergency personnel, the public, and the media and lead the work of a Communications Center; provide support and guidance to other dispatchers and call takers within the Communications Center to perform their duties effectively and proficiently; train and provide guidance to new dispatchers; operate within a specific geographic area by sending and receiving information and sending emergency assistance or service equipment to assist law enforcement personnel or the public; operate a variety of equipment; maintain logs and records; and accesses information through various systems/databases including CAD, VCIN, NCIC, NLETS. May work rotating shifts and is considered essential personnel. See DHRM job listing for more details.

Applicants hired into this position who are not currently VA state government employees are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus upon hire with signature of a 12-month agreement.

Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service. Current Virginia State Police employees working in a Dispatcher function are not eligible for a retention bonus.

Does a job as a dispatcher require a background check?

Yes. All Virginia State Police employees are required to pass a fingerprint-based background check.

What qualifications are you looking for in a dispatcher?

Candidates should possess a High school or GED equivalent, and be able to type 35 wpm. Prior First Aid/CPR experience is preferred. Candidates should either have United States citizenship or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years to apply for VCIN certification. Selected candidates will need to obtain First Aid/CPR and VCIN certifications after hire. The agency will provide training for the selected candidates.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS FOR CIVILIAN EMPLOYMENT

  1. Any conviction or plea of guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 
  2. Any illegal use of any controlled substance (illegal drug) listed in Schedule I or Schedule II of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia in the past five years or the illegal use of any controlled substance listed in Schedule I or Schedule II more than twice in the past 10 years. The use of any hallucinogenic substance such as LSD, PCP, or Psilocybin at any time in the past 10 years.
  3. Illegal sale of any drug or narcotic at any time in your life.
  4. A conviction of driving under the influence in the past five years, or more than one conviction of driving under the influence in the applicant’s lifetime, if the position requires the operation of Virginia State Police vehicles.
  5. Active revocation or suspension of driving privileges in any state, if the position requires the operation of Virginia State Police vehicles.
  6. Any conviction that required registration on any Sex Offender Registry.
  7. Falsification of application with intent to conceal or mislead.
  8. Documented untruthfulness during applicant process.
